Seniors! by Mindy Ravines Photography

Senior portraits are a big farewell to high school. Bittersweet time in one’s life. The senior is excited for what’s to come. The parent is swallowing hard reflecting on all of the milestones we counted, marked on the walls, & took photos of.  The future is so exciting, but at the same time turning the page to the next chapter can be difficult when we enjoy the view of the current page. Photographing this senior all I kept thinking about was my babies’ senior portraits. What will we be laughing about to get that perfect smile that chokes me up every time? How tall will they be? Will there be certain items they HAVE TO include in their portraits? So many questions when I know I need to embrace every moment today….before tomorrow arrives.

Here are a few of my favorites.

Our last photo...for me! I want one like this with my babies.

His pose isn't my favorite, but the brick wall & sleeve detail speak to me.

Senior Portraits at the Baylor Street Art Wall in Austin, TX by Mindy Ravines Photography

Senior portraits can be so much fun! Thinking about certain looks & locations that each individual relates to gives me the chance to do some creative thinking. I knew Megan liked the idea of the infamous ‘graffiti wall’ also known as the Baylor Street Art Wall at 11th & Baylor, but that was it….My creative juices took over & we were quite thrilled with the results (side street to an Austin Law Office as well as an alley with a lonely staircase). Everywhere you turn in Austin there is a cool ‘this’ or fun ‘that’ to use as a backdrop.  I had specific instructions from her momma: get her to smile. Frankly, the full on smiles weren’t my favorites…I love Megan’s sly, clever grin any day! Here are some of my favorites:

Senior Portraits in Austin, TX by Mindy Ravines Photography

What up McNeil Mavericks?! Here’s another McNeil Maverick ‘SENIOR 2013’ displaying a few of his favorite reasons to live in Austin, TX. We started our conversation on ‘senior portraits’ over a year ago & he wanted to ‘interview’ me 😀 I grinned & said, ‘let’s do this!’ The interview never took place & let’s be honest who likes to interview or to be interviewed?!? I’ve never been a fan of interviews…in fact in the corporate world I feared, loathed, & was tortured over the thought of an interview. I welcome them in the world of photography. Now it’s fun to talk about myself & why I’m doing what I love to do. My how things change…..

Regardless of Michael’s initial thoughts of me/my skills his ending thoughts were ‘I love them all!’ I’m posting my faves…hoping he isn’t too embarrassed that I’m sharing (mom said it was ok!). His mom said he looked like a model & I have to agree. Thank you Rebecca for the fabulous time photographing your fabulous baby boy (all grown up!). I hope he enjoys the long lasting portraits & memories we made that day!

Senior portraits at The University of Texas in Austin, TX by Mindy Ravines Photography

I’ve learned a lot during my years as a professional photographer. If you ever become stale or stop learning-change your life-STAT. The continuation of growth & new life experiences is a must! I was recently asked to photograph a masters student at the University of Texas. Hmmmm….I had never considered photographing college seniors about to graduate & wanting to capture this moment in time. Genius! This is one of those times in your life when you think “I TOTALLY should have thought of that years ago!!!!” When I arrived at the infamous UT Tower. There were at least 10 other UT senior portrait sessions underway. One photographer followed us around…using our backdrops & our poses…awkward! I kept thinking “what is his client thinking?” Regardless, Ruth & I had a blast! I loved our time together & she loved her forever memories of her huge accomplishment. Thank you Ruth for keeping me on my toes & allowing me to be a part of your memories!

Have you heard of the McNeil Mavericks? My children will one day be Mavericks. AND I have enjoyed each senior I’ve photographed from McNeil High School in Austin, TX. This senior was totally laid back & wanted to do a quick 30 minute portrait session. I picked a location & we started chatting. Most of the time he was not aware I was shooting. I wanted him to feel relaxed & not so ‘in the spotlight.’ We accomplished all goals & mom was thrilled with the results. Here are my faves:

Senior Portraits Texas Style!

Senior portraits are so much fun. A great way for me to get creative with a person on the road to adult life…we had a brainstorming session to determine the most interesting locations to shoot…it was mostly me & ‘mom’ discussing this, but what can I say….Matthew is a laid back kinda guy!

Getting to know Matthew was hysterical! His mother told some interesting stories. I loved the one about him dressing up as Santa Claus at a non-dress-up gathering w/his high school buddies (so avant-garde).  I was *so* hoping to see this outfit on the day of our shoot…but it was a no-go. Thank you Matthew for enduring your mother’s endless love…she will always see that sweet baby boy in her big man!

Senior Portraits: Kelsey

You can not take a bad photo of Kelsey…she’s amazing! She smiles with her eyes…her entire face lights up…just beautiful. She was so much fun & up for multiple locations during our shoot so we had a blast! ALSO, she brought tons of outfits & shoes for us to play with–so great! I think it’s important to learn something new everyday & on that day I learned a few things…but one thing that really surprised me was that Bowie High School’s Lacrosse team wears a kilt as part of their uniform. How cool is that?! I want to go back to high school & play lacrosse!

Neelam suggested the perfect location for her senior portraits!
She is quite familiar with the Austin Museum of Art so that’s where we went. The gorgeous surroundings made for a perfect backdrop! She was right at home & her photos show her comfort level & true spirit. Thanks for a great day Neelam!
